Consortium to finance Qazvin-Astara rail line linking Baku and Tehran

The governments in Tehran and Baku have agreed to form a consortium to finance and develop the Qazvin-Rasht-Astara rail line that will eventually link the two capital cities and provide  Azerbaijan with fast overground links to Asia, the Persian Gulf and eventually Africa, Iran’s ambassador to Azerbaijan  Mohsen Pak-Ayeen  announced this week.
The establishment of the consortium was agreed at a meeting  between Azerbaijan’s Minister of Economy and Industry Shahin Mustafayev and his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Vaezi in Tehran  as Iran seeks to capitalise both on the imminent lifting of Western sections and the growing momentum behind the idea of a New Silk Road.
An MoU concerning  the construction of the rail link was signed earlier in the year and part of the line is already under construction.
