Azerbaijan signs up to Viking railway project

The government in Baku this week committed the state-run Azerbaijan Railways to joining the international Viking railway project in a move that could open up a multimodal passenger and freight transport route running from the Baltic Sea port of Klaipedia in Lithuania to the Middle East, Central  and Southern Asia and ultimately China.
At a meeting in Baku, representatives from Azerbaijan Railways signed a protocol with their counterparts from railway agencies in Lithuania, Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia, along with  rail freight transporters of Bulgaria and Romania, The protocol allows for  Azerbaijan’s rail network to be used to increase freight transport between the Baltic Sea Region and Kazakhstan and China, andthe new Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway to  be opened up to transport container traffic between Turkey and Ukraine.
