Baku ‘missing piece’ in East-West transport jigsaw

Baku will become a key link in the transport network linking Asia top Europe once Azerbaijan completes its section of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway line,  the chairman of Dubai Ports Customs and Free Zone Corporation Ahmed Sultan bin Sulayem said this week.
“We provide rail freight from China to Europe via Kazakhstan and Russia,”  he told the head of Azerbaijan’s State Customs Committee Aydin Aliyevat. “The sea route from China to Rotterdam takes 42 days and the rail route 20.”
The BTK is an essential part of that rail route as it will provide a land bridge through Turkey and bypass the Georgian Black Sea port of Batumi. The project has suffered a number of delays, however,  and it is unclear if it will be ready by the end of year as predicted by Azerbaijan’s Transportation Minister, Ziya Mammadov early last year. Baku therefore remains the “missing piece of the jigsaw,” Sulayem said.
