BP Azerbaijan is planning to start exploratory drilling on in the shallow waters of the Absheron peninsula by the end of next year, its Regional President for Azerbaijan, Turkey and Georgia Gordon Birell announced this week, with three-dimensional seismic studies due to begin next month. BP was officially awarded the contract to explore the peninsula’s waters by SOCAR in April last year. The agreement covers a 1,900 km² area that extends along the southern section of the Absheron Peninsula. The sea depth is about 25 meters, and the depth of the bedding of the potentially productive strata between 3,000 and 5,000 meters.
