EU rushes to secure gas supplies from Caspian Sea: With relations between the West and Russia showing no signs of improving in the near future, the EU has made the firming up of agreements for gas supplies from Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan a matter of priority, according to reports in Spiegel Online. Documents secured by the German media organisation indicate that the EU intends to have signed MoUs with the governments in Baku and Ashgabat by 2016 that would secure the stability of European gas supplies. The EU is also looking to strengthen strategic energy partnerships with other producer and transit countries including Algeria, Turkey, the Middle East, several African countries, Norway, the US and Canada.
