Iran and Azerbaijan talk joint gas export strategy

Iran and Azerbaijan have opened discussions about the possibility of pooling their resources in their efforts to increase global exports of natural gas, the Managing Director of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) told the ISNA news agency said on Monday.
His remarks are the latest sign of Tehran’s ambitions to rejoin the world stage with a vengeance once sanctions are lifted and of Azerbaijan’s willingness to cooperate with its Caspian Sea neighbour.  During a recent visit to Teheran, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Economy and Industry Shakhin Mustafayev reportedly told Iran’s Oil Minister Bijan Zangeneh that Iran could use Azerbaijan’s infrastructure to pump its oil to world markets.
“Iran can use Azerbaijan’s infrastructure, especially the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline to export its oil,” Mustafayev was quoted as saying. He also invited Iran to join the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) project sometime in the future.
