Trans-Caspian pipeline: The EU supports Azerbaijan’s and Turkmenistan’s right to build and operate a pipeline on the bed of the Caspian Sea, a delegation to Baku confirmed this week. If constructed the 300-km pipeline deliver hydrocarbons from Turkmenistan’s section of the Caspian Sea to Turkey and from there on to Europe. The project is opposed by Russia and Iran on environmental grounds although their position is almost certainly also coloured by the unresolved issue of just who owns which part of the sea. Trend
