With the cost of the Russian food ban being estimated at around €5.5bn, European farmers have announced that they are organising a demonstration in Brussels for September 7. While the demonstration is intended to put pressure on the EU to intensify talks with Russia to remove certain pork products from the embargo, its other main message will be that Europe’s dairy farmers are in crisis and need an increase in the price of milk €0.27 to €0.38 a litre of they are to break even and in many cases survive.
Russia introduced a ban on fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, milk and dairy imports from the US, the European Union, Australia, Canada and Norway almost exactly a year ago in retaliation for sanction imposed following its annexation of Crimea.
