Egypt eyes up Russia’s Mistral helicopter carriers

Egypt may end up buying the two Mistral helicopter carriers that were originally destined for Russia, it was revealed, today after a high-level Egyptian delegation arrived in Paris to negotiate their purchase along with two Gowind corvettes.
According to a report in La Tribune, the delegation has a mandate from President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi to talk to Mistral manufacturers DCNS about buying the two carriers after France pulled out of  a contract to supply them to the Russian navy on the grounds that the deal contravened Western sanctions imposed in the wake of Russia’s annexation of Crimea.
