Leopard 3 : The recent unveiling of Russia’s new Armata tank at the Red Square Victory parade has prompted the defence ministries of Germany and France to start work on the development of a new tank of their own to replace the Leopard 2, according to reports in Die Welt. The Leopard 2 first saw service in 1979 and since then has been deployed in both Kosovo and Afghanistan, but is due to be phased out by 2030. Although the working title for the new tank is Leopard 3, it is as yet unclear if it will be a modification of the existing design or will represent a radical departure.
