Indian internet usage overtakes US

Indian Internet usage: With 277 million Internet users recorded last year, India has overtaken the US in terms of online usage and now stands second only to China after witnessing a phenomenal 40 % growth rate in 2015, according to Mary Meeker’s 2016 Internet Trends  that was published earlier this week. With  internet usage actually shrinking across the rest of the world, India is the only big country to have registered an increase in the number of Internet users, the report says.
It also suggests that the number of Indians using the internet  – particularly on mobile devices – could continue to grow as only just over one fifth of the subcontinent’s residents actually logged on last year. The growth is being driven is not just by  low levels of penetration but also by the low cost of smartphones in India which at around $158, is among the lowest in the world.
