LNG from Iran: With negotiators in Vienna racing to reach an agreement over Iran’s nuclear programme before tomorrow’s deadline, a senior official from Tehran is claiming that Iran is already in negotiations with “the world’s biggest” FLNG shipping service and could start exporting LNG to Europe sometime next year.
The claim was made by the National Iranian Gas Exports Company’s Managing Director Alireza Kameli to the Shana news agency; and although he declined to specify the company in question, it is being speculated that he was referring to Royal Dutch Shell, whose CEO Ben van Beurden travelled to Tehran in June.
The regional head of Shell’s media relations Nureddin Wefati denied that an agreement was necessarily imminent, however. “There is no possibility for Shell to move forward with new business in Iran until there has been a significant change in the sanctions environment,” he told Natural Gas Europe. “Shell is committed to complying with all the relevant international sanctions.”
