Khorgos – Eastern Gate SEZ operational in months

The Khorgos – Eastern Gate SEZ, the massive logistics and industrial zone on Kazakhstan’s border with China, will be up and running by September according to the Managing Director of  the country’s Samruk-Kazyna sovereign wealth fund. Development of the zone, which is seen as a key element in the New Silk Road linking China to Europe, had been delayed due to issues relating to the allocation of funds for the project, he told the parliament in Astana, but work was now back on track and 51 of its 68 components would be operational by the end of the summer.  Located on a 5,740 ha site in  Almaty region’s Panfilov district, the SEZ will eventually comprise a number of trade and exhibition centres and an industrial hub in addition to its dry port and transport and logistics centre. By 2020, the zone is expected to be handling 4.4m tons of cargo annually and to have created 10,000 jobs.
