The Astana International Financial Centre (AIFC) will become one of the world’s top 20 financial centres, if Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev has his way. In a strategy manifesto published today, Nazarbayev outlines plans to model AIFC on a combination of the UK’s regulatory system and Dubai’s investment environment with a view to turning it into a financial hub for the CIS and both Western and Central Asia. The newly re-elected President envisages developing a centre that specialises in capital markets, Islamic finance, private banking and asset management aided and abetted by a liberal tax regime.
