Turganov calls for Russian import ban: The Deputy Mayor of Kazkhstan’s Pavlodar region has appealed to the government in Astana to impose a temporary ban on Russian imports that are undercutting local manufacturers. “Kazakh suppliers are faced with the fact that Russian competitors can offer some types of goods at 30-60% below local prices,” Duisenbai Turganov told the country’s First Deputy Prime Minister Bakytzhan Sagintayev, “and this is having a negative impact on the activities of local industrial enterprises.” Turganov is calling for either a ban or a restriction on imports of goods that are threatening the existence of domestic suppliers, or the imposition of anti-dumping measures. Sagintayev has assured Turganov that the issue is sure to be on the agenda when Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister Karim Massimov meets with his Russian counterpart Dmitri Medvedev in Moscow on Friday.
