A major new Kazakh oil field has been discovered by Meridian Petroleum in the country’s western region of Mangystau which could be one of the largest discoveries of hydrocarbons in the nation’s post-independence history. The oil concentrated in the field is reported to be relatively low in sulphurous content as compared with other hydrocarbons discovered in the country, which will make it easier to process and transport as fossil fuel. Officials in Kazakhstan believe that the Khalel Uzbekgaliyev field (named after a Soviet era Kazakh oilman) would “give a powerful impetus to the social and economic development of the region and create new jobs.” The Mangystau region is located in the southwest of the country on the Caspian Sea and borders on both Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
