Apple has entered into a partnership with the Moscow-based data center operator IXcellerate that will see the personal data of its Russian users being transferred to one of the Russian company’s data centres, according to unnamed sources quoted in the Kommersant newspaper today.
The deal means that Apple will be in compliance with the new legislation obliging all companies supplying Internet services in Russia, or targeting Russian users, to store such data inside the country as from September 1.
Most major IT companies have announced their intention to comply with the law but some major multinationals – including Facebook – have yet to formally state their position. More than 2.6 million companies are affected by the law, officials at the state communications watchdog Roskomnadzor said last month.
