Asteroid detection software: EMERCOM, the Russian federal ministry dedicated to the prevention of natural and man-caused emergencies is working with some of the country’s top astronomers to develop the IT-based analytical component of a new national system for the early detection of asteroids, comets and other dangerous extraterrestrial ‘wanderers.’ Part of the system could be up and running by 2030, according to Boris Shustov, Director of Russia’s Institute of Astronomy, but in the long run the project will require the construction and launch of a space observatory that could detect asteroids larger than 50 metres across and up to 75 million kilometres away (roughly half the distance between the earth and the sun.)
