Belarus could leave EEU: Belarus’s continuing participation in the Eurasian Economic Union should not be taken for granted, its President Alexander Lukashenko told a press conference last week, warning that it could break from the nascent trading bloc if any agreements were broken. Lukashenko was talking as an IMF delegation arrived in Minsk and in the context of ongoing tensions between Belarus and Russia precipitated by Russia’s retaliatory sanctions on food imports from the EU; in recent months, Russia has repeatedly turned back trucks on the border between the two countries, accusing Belarusian exporters of trying to pass off fruit, vegetable and meat that originated in the West as their own, an accusation denied by Lukashenko and his compatriots.
