The Black Sea Fleet is to take delivery of the new and improved Kilo class submarine designed and developed by the Russian Navy by the end of the year. The Kilo class diesel-electric submarines use diesel generators to charge their batteries, which in turn power the electric motors that turn the ships’ propellers when they are underwater, making them even quieter than nuclear powered submarines.
