Donetsk sets up banking network: The Central Republican Bank of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) has opened up 89 branches, 69 of which have 24/7 currency exchange counters in them, the republic’s press centre said today. All branches have the facilities to process welfare benefit and pension payments, it added, and advised any citizen who was entitled to social security benefits to apply to their nearest branch. Donetsk has been in throws of an economic crisis for months and the situation was exacerbated last month when the Ukrainian government introduced strict controls on traffic entering and leaving rebel-controlled territory. Residents have largely been unable to obtain money since banks and ATM machines ceased operations in November.
