EU bids to vet members’ energy suppliers

EU bids to vet members’ energy suppliers: According to Germany’s Sueddeutsche Zeitung, the EU has drawn up a proposal that would limit member states’ power to determine their choice of energy supplier and the terms  of any contracts they sign with outside countries when it comes to securing their sources of oil and gas. Before signing any contracts in this area, member states would have to submit the agreement to Brussels to ensure that it complied with EU law. According to the newspapwe,  it can hardly be a coincidence that the project has been drafted at a time when relations between Russia and the West are at their worst for over 30 years; but it also predicts that it is likely to meet strong resistance from Germany many of whose major industrial  companies have long-term agreements  with Russia covering its energy supplies.
