The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has applied for planning permission to build a five-star hotel on the site of the old Hotel Rossiya that was demolished nine years ago, it was revealed last week. Backed and sponsored by Olympic sports complex owner Dmitry Shumkov, blueprints for the design of a 54,000 m² hotel with 150 room and 51 apartments have been submitted to the authorities in Moscow. The proposed $250m complex would also include restaurants, offices and retail space.
Founded in Hong Kong in 1963, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group currently owns a chain of 29 five-star hotels, but none so far in Russia.
