Meeting on Ukraine winter gas package set for September

EU Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias Canete

Ukraine winter gas package: A trilateral meeting between Ministers from the EU, Russia and Ukraine could be arranged for next month in an effort to reach an agreement on gas pricing for the winter, the EU Commissioner for Energy and Climate Action Miguel Arias Cañete said on Thursday after publishing a document outlining new proposals coving timing and formula.
“The paper will be discussed in bilateral meetings at the ministerial level,” he explained. ” The first one will be on August 27 with the Ukrainian minister and possibly at the beginning of September with the Russian minister. There is a convergence that there will probably be a trilateral ministerial meeting at the end of September.”
The EU’s priority was to ensure Ukraine’s gas supply, this winter, he said.
“Ukraine still needs to fill its storages to at least 19bn m³ in order to prepare for a rough winter. The current level is 13.5 bcm. They need to buy more gas.”
