Moscow cuts gas supplies to Ukraine as Crimean blackout continues

Russia has stopped gas supplies to Ukraine because Kiev has defaulted on a prepayment deal, Gazprom chief Alexei Miller said this morning, confirming remarks made earlier this week by  Energy Minister Alexander Novak. The stand-off between the two countries has been further exacerbated by Russian claims that the Ukrainian authorities are not doing enough to allow crews to repair the pylons supplying Crimea with electricity which were blown up by unidentified saboteurs at the weekend, leaving the peninsula dependent on emergency generators.
“Today or tomorrow gas deliveries will be stopped because of lack of advance payment,”  the minister said. He also threatened to cut off coal supplies to Ukraine’s power stations in retaliation for Kiev’s unwillingness to help restore Crimea’s electricity lines.
