Northern Sea Route could be ice-free in 15 years, claims expert

The Northern Sea Route could be  completely free of ice all year round,  The Deputy Director of the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology Leopold Shirshov Lobkovsky is predicting. “If the Arctic warms another five degrees over the next 15 years, the Northern Sea Route open all winter. But we do not exactly know [if this is going to happen] as temperatures behave irregularly.” Average Arctic temperatures  have increased by between five and seven degrees in the last 15-20 years.
