Poroshenko calls for World Cup boycott: In an interview with the German publication Bild over the weekend, Ukraine’s president Petro Poroshenko called on its allies to strengthen anti-Russian sanctions and to boycott the 2018 World Cup. Poroshenko used the interview to place the blame for violations of the ceasefire agreed in Minsk firmly on Russia’s shoulders and did not rule out further aggression from rebel militia. As well as calling for the imposition of further sanctions and the extension of the ones already in place until the end of the year at the very least, Poroshenko also wants the 2018 FIFA World Cup, due to take place in Russia, to be boycotted. From Kiev’s perspective, it would be “unthinkable” for Russia to host the event while it still had troops in Ukraine, he said.
