Russia should lift food embargo for its own good, says senior German politician

Gernot Erler

Russian food embargo: Gernot Erler, the German government’s principal representative in its dealings with Russia and Central Asia, this week urged Moscow to lift its boycott of EU food imports “in the interests of its own citizens.” In an interview in Nordwest-ZeitungErler argues that the embargo has made a significant contribution to Russia’s food price inflation which in some instances has reached 30%. Since the beginning of August, Russia has banned the import of a wide range of meat, dairy products, fruit and vegetables from the US, EU, Canada, Australia and Norway in retaliation for the sanctions imposed by the West in the wake of the annexation of Crimea and subsequent events in eastern Ukraine.
