Russia sues Ukraine over $3bn debt

Russia’s Finance Minister Anton Siluanov

Russia sues Ukraine: Russia has filed a lawsuit against Ukraine at London’s High Court after the two sides failed to come to an agreement over a $3bn debt,  Russia’s  Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said today.
The dispute surrounds a $3bn eurobond that was issued in late 2013, shortly before pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych was removed from power following massive protests. The bond  reached maturity on 20 December last year and at the time Ukraine’s Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk  said that the country had imposed a moratorium on the repayment, claiming that Russia had refused to accept terms offered to other creditors.
Mr Siluanov said he now  hoped that legal proceedings would be “open and transparent” at the “independent, authoritative court”.
Tensions have been running high between the two neighbours with  Kiev and the West accusing Moscow of arming and aiding separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine, allegations that Russia has denied.
