Russia turns to ASEAN: Following Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev’s visit to Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia last week, Russia has made it clear that Western trade sanctions are galvanising it to diversify its investment risks and expand trade ties with its south-eastern neighbours as well as with China. In the course of the visit, Medvedev announced that Russia was planning to double trade with each of his three host countries, and it has now emerged that, according to the Yonhap news agency, South Korea intends to enter into a consortium with Russia to develop projects in North Korea’s Rajin-Sonbong (Rason) special economic zone. “The conflict between Russia and the West in the context of the Ukrainian crisis raises yet another ambitious goal for Korean diplomacy,” South Korean Vice Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul said on Sunday.
