Sabetta International, the Russian Arctic airport built specifically to service the untapped hydrocarbon fields of the Yamal Peninsula, this week saw the first passenger aircraft touch down safely on its frozen runways as a Boeing 737-400 flew in from Novy Urengoy filled entirely with Yamal LNG employees.The new airport will primarily serve as a transport hub for workers on the Yamal LNG field, but its geographical location is seen as strategically important to the opening of this inaccessible region of Russia’s Arctic territories.
