Ukraine stops Russian gas imports: Ukraine today ceased to purchase gas from Russia after energy officials from the two countries failed to agree on a new tariff regime during talks in Vienna. Ukraine will now buy its gas from other sources – principally Slovakia – until new terms can be agreed, its Energy Minister Volodymyr Demchyshyn said, with talks expected to be reconvened in September. Kiev’s decision will in no way effect the supply of Russian gas to Europe that is transported through Ukraine, a spokesman for Ukraine’s state-run Nafotgaz claimed.
