Assad looks to Russia to help rebuild Syria

It could cost as much as $400bn to rebuild the Syrian economy, President Bashar al-Assad told a  Russian delegation in Damascus over the weekend and the reconstruction process could take as long as 15 years – but he is not expecting much help from the West. “We are not waiting for Western companies here, especially in the oil and gas sphere,” Assad said, according to the delegation’s head Dmitry Sablin. “I spoke about that with President  Putin in Sochi. We want Russian companies to work here, and we expect their fast market entry.”
Assad’s remarks point to major payback for Russia for its support for the President’s regime during talks which also covered cooperation agreements between the Moscow Region and Damascus Governorate and between Tartus and Sevastopol, .
