Ankara to expropriate 30 villages to build Istanbul-Izmir highway

Istanbul-Izmir highway: The Turkish government has decided to expropriate properties in some 30 villages and neighbourhoods in Marmara to expedite construction of the new road linking Istanbul to Izmir on its Aegean coast. The decision will see  hundreds of properties in Bursa and Balikesir being forcibly acquired.
The project, which also includes construction of a giant suspension bridge bypassing Izmit Bay, is expected to reduce journey time between the two cities from nine hours down to 3.5. The highway is due to be ready by 2017.Work is already under way on the bridge with a 124-metre long, 36-metre deck  and two towers having been erected over the summer,
