China’s CGN to invest £9bn in Hinkley Point nuclear power plant

China’s General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) has agreed to pay £6bn for a 33% stake in the UK’s Hinkley Point nuclear power plant in Somerset, and may buy a further 15% stake off owners EDF sometime in the future. The agreement also set up a wider UK partnership to develop new nuclear power stations at Sizewell and Bradwell, the latter of which is planned to include a Chinese-designed reactor.
The deal  was confirmed today at a news conference held jointly by Prime Minister David Cameron and Chinese President Xi Jinpin during a state visit during which deals worth a total of $30bn are expected to be struck.
